Winnies blown away

Despite a number of players being away for Easter holidays, Bury fielded a strong side for their final way match of the season at Aldwinians, and came away with a convincing win.

On a hard and sandy pitch, Bury scored first after an excellent run by Alex Bolton had created an opportunity in the right hand corner. With Bradley Wright held up just short, James Pendlebury was on hand to drive the ball over the line for the first points of the day.

Bury then allowed Aldwinians back into the game, and allowed them to score down the blindside following a ruck 8 metres out, with the extras converted.
Following a re-shuffle in the Bury ranks after an excellent show from Aidan Jagger in recent training sessions, Jack Bracewell found himself moved from outside centre to wing, and showed good pace and strength to come within touching distance of the line on several occasions. Stopped just short on his first such drive, Josh Banwell was on hand to pick up from the back of the ruck to drive over from 4 metres out.

With half time approaching, Bury were encamped in the Aldwinians 22, and following an infringement, Bradley Wright took a quick penalty to himself and dived over in the corner before the defence could get organised, Josh Brody converting.
Half Time: Aldwinians 7 – Bury 17.

Bury started the second half under pressure, and when a penalty was awarded to Bury near their own 5 metre line, Alex Bolton reacted quickest, took a quick tap and raced the length of the field to score, Xavier Jacques converting. Bury were now playing their best rugby of the game and when Josh Banwell broke through midfield after great work by the forwards, Alex Bolton was on hand on his outside shoulder to take the pass and race on to score, Xavier Jacques again converting.
From the kick off, Bury’s purple patch continued as Alex Bolton picked up the ball on his own try line after James Pendlebury had taken the kick off and been driven backwards, and again raced the length of the field to score.

The home team fought back to again score down the blindside, this time following a quick penalty, but by now the result was not in doubt. Josh Banwell extended Bury’s lead with a arcing run to the right hand corner after the forwards had again done all the hard work to set up a great position 10 metres out, Ben Maguire converting.

More Bury pressure followed, and when Aldwinians infringed 8 metres out, Xavier Jacques was able to take a quick tap whilst the defence was lining up its big guns opposite the Bury forwards to dive over.

Final Score: Aldwinians 14 – Bury 50.

A great team performance, with some good rucking from the forwards and some exquisite handling and great running from the backs. All we need now is for the sun to shine when we visit Tarleton on April 11th for the Barclays Cup finals day, and for the team to play to its full potential on the day. Let’s hope it’s a grand day out!
